World Series of Poker

It was the summer of '49 when a chronic gambler by the unassuming name of Nicholas Dandolos - who went by the almost as unassuming handle "Nick the Greek" - approached another probably suitably nicknamed chap (the records don't show) by the name of Benny Binion with a little proposition. 'The Greek' sought a showdown with the best poker player getting about and Binion was just the kinda guy to arrange such a rendezvous.
And so it was that Benny - let's call him Big Balls - Binion organized the Greek's opponent - the legendary Johnny 'a rolling stone gathers no' Moss - for what would become known as the pre-cursor to today's World Series of Poker.
The pair battled it out over of five protracted, grueling months with breaks only for meals, flatulence and sleep. They matched wits engaged in every variety of poker imaginable and probably some invented purely for the occasion.
In the end it was the Greek who lost his Empire - a reputed 2 million, decent bucks in any era - and Johnny Moss who reigned supreme. When the Greek lost his last pot, he rose from his chair, bowed ever so slightly, and uttered the now-famous words, "Mr. Moss, I have to let you go." Dandolos then promptly left for bed. The kicker was that over the five months masses of spectators had gathered to watch the pair battle it out - but it took until 1970, 21 years later before the first official World Series of Poker took place. True story (with just a touch of artistic license)!
From those humble beginnings over half a century ago began what is now a televised, multi-million dollar event attracting thousands of keen, cashed up, larger than life punters drawn from all corners of the globe.
Events include Texas Hold'em Limit, Omaha Pot Limit, 7-Card-Stud Hi/Lo, Pot Limit, No Limit, and other types of poker such as Razz and Lowball and culminate in the grand finale - the World Championship Event.
So if you think you got the cojones to take on the big boys, the World Series of Poker kicks off in Vegas around June. Advice? Rest up, pack light and don't forget your wallet.
