World Championship Duck Calling Contest
World Championship Duck Calling Contest

This annual event has been held every November since 1936, making it the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in the nation. That first year only attracted 17 contestants, and the winner, Thomas E. Walsh of Greenville, MS, won without using a duck call. In other words, that old boy had the power to pull a duck out of his throat.
Today, the contest is part of the weekend-long Wings Over the Prairie Festival, which attracts some 60,000 sportsmen from around the country. The contest is made up of more than 60 men and women who earned a spot in the World Championships by winning one of the many regional duck calling events held around the country every year; you don't have to use a prefab duck call, but 99% of the entrants do. Here they compete for a package worth more than $15,000. While callers must spend $50 to enter, the entire weekend is free for festivalgoers.
