The battle for the Auld Mug has been raging since 1870 but it wasn't until the 25th edition of the America's Cup in Newport, RI in 1983 that the Aussies nabbed it from the Yanks and in the process ended over one hundred years of American domination. Today the event's as much about high-tech gadgetry and bits 'n' bobs as it is about tactics but it still makes a wonderful spectacle for the few lucky ones who can get near enough to view the action up-close.
