Handcars are relics of railroad history, flatbeds on steel wheels that miners and track crews propelled by a hand pump. Truckee, home of the California State Railroad Museum, has celebrated its rich rail history every September since 1983 with the U.S. National Handcar Races.
An average of thirty teams -- five members each -- pay $20 per person to enter. And there's no charge for spectators to witness these racers pump 1000 pounds of handcar down a 1000-foot path to glory.
