After the recent passing of Grandpa Jones -- Country Music Hall-of-Fame banjo player and star from the TV show Hee Haw -- the Ozark Folk Center decided to mount a tribute to his music and his life.
In September 1999, 700 people showed up to listen to family and friends of Grandpa Jones as they told stories and played his music. This first event was such a success that local organizers decided to hold the tribute annually.
