St. Stupid's Day Parade

by © Jan Friedman 2009

Festival Location: San Francisco, CA, USA

Festival State: Californian Festivals

Festival Type(s): Bizarre Festivals, Street Parades

Dress in costume and bring noise makers, confetti and socks to be part of the April Fool's Day St Stupid's Day Parade put on by the First Church of the Last Laugh. The parade, pure political satire that also mocks the religion of business, has been marching through San Francisco's financial district since 1979, stopping to stage mini-events in front of public and corporate buildings. (For example, the Pacific Stock Exchange is the setting for the sock exchange.) Workers lean out their windows to watch as marchers pass by chanting, "No more chanting!", and covering up the private parts of statues along the way.
