"Some People Try to Use an Actual Snow Soccer Ball-Made of Snow - But That Doesn't Work Too Well."

- Finnish Snow Soccer

There are many ways to injure yourself in the snow. There's frostbite. There's the possibility of slipping and falling: A quarter-inch of snow, despite the looks of it, doesn't leave much room between you and concrete; and deeper snow, despite appearing like a fresh mound of powder to jump in, can conceal an otherwise conspicuous fire hydrant.

With the advent of snow soccer, there's now another option: Being smacked by a frozen-hard soccer ball on your frigid-fleshed thigh.

Perhaps it seems logical (at least to the Finnish) that this sport grew out of the success of their swamp soccer; apparently burr! is their new yuck! In 2006, Finland held a World Cup competition, and Tomsk, Siberia, now hosts its annual tournament, the Siberian Snow Ball.

In heavy boots and padded snow pants, the teams' greatest difficulty is surely running back and forth in thick snow. What's the only thing that could possibly make this form of soccer more challenging? Perhaps the athletes' mothers on the sidelines, nagging the players to zip up their coats?
