With the advent of indoor plumbing, traditional outhouses suffered a tragic fate: They were mounted on skis and pushed down a hill.

In 1993, the people of Trenary, a town on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, decided to call that a sport and began hosting its annual Outhouse Classic. Trenarians continue to host this event the last weekend in February, where teams of three - two pushers and one rider (that's right, they ride there) - construct outhouses, equip them with a mounted roll of toilet paper, and then race the boxes down a 500-foot course in front of thousands of potty-mouthed spectators.

Similar events now take place in Mackinaw City, Michigan; Conocully, Washington; and as part of Alaska's Fur Rondy Festival. (Apparently, like dysentery, the sport is highly contagious.) Trenary's Outhouse Classic awards competitors for winning the race, best presentation, most humorous, people's choice, best overall, and farthest traveled.
