Children and families race against corporations and the military in the Milk Carton Derby, a colorful, if not exactly seaworthy flotilla of crafts made from at least 50 half-gallon milk cartons each. The object is to get the human-powered contraption across 1200 feet of water to the finish line, an objective not always achieved. Each milk carton only supports about four pounds of weight so folks start collecting milk cartons months in advance of the event. Awards are given in many categories including for the most impressively designed and decorated craft. The derby has been kicking off Seattle's Seafair activities for 33 years.
