Since 2001 the folk of Maldon in Essex, UK have kept a dirty little secret. Come early January each year they dress to the nines, gather in large numbers in the local Promenade Park and then make a crazed charge across the River Blackwater and back.

The Maldon Mud Race is a frightfully dirty affair, as the name suggests but what better way to work off all that Christmas turkey and 'tatoes, than a mad mud dash through a freezing river!

The whole bash is to raise money for local charity and there's tons of prizes up for grabs. So if you don't mind getting down and dirty, why not make a day of it.
