salesforce.com, inc. (CRM)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company is a provider of application services that allow organizations to easily share customer information on demand. It also provides CRM service to businesses of all sizes and industries worldwide.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

It's been a long time in the making, but I think "Thin Client" software applications are finally starting to find a niche, and they all begin with Customer Relation Management. Mobile Business needs these types of services. SalesForce will be a Force in 2008.

Forward multiple of approx. 186, on a company that already sports a $6 B market cap? Unless CRM stands for "Cancer Remedy Medicine" I'm not sure in this coming recession this momentum stock will hold up... especially once the other big boys start to attack.

Of course, it could be boug...More

Decent solution that was first to market in the on demand CRM space. CEO knows how to market himself and his company, and Ellison's arrogance seems to have rubbed off on him. The company's stock is way overpriced, but who knows what can happen when a stock is trading on momentum in the short term? The sky's the limit, baby! Oh yeah, my company uses this piece of &$%# software and we all hate it. Still, we continue to send them checks, so they're laughing all the way to the bank.

We use SFDC. It is an amazing product and they will be around for a very long time. That said, I wouldn't own the stock at this price or anything near it. Reasons:

1. Obviously, it is hard for any company that big to grow quickly enough to justify a 400 PE,

2. They will get nipped at from the bottom by dozens of cheaper competitors (Sugar, Zoho, etc.) and from the top by the big guys (Sage, SAS, MSFT)

3. SFDC has a huge liability in that it holds mission critical data for thousands of companies. If google went down for a day, no one would really care. If SFDC goes down for an hour, they hear about it for years and their stock hears about it within minutes.

This is a really great company with a really great product. But with ONE product, and I don't see P/E ratios in excess of 400 justified.
