International Dance Festival AURA

In 1989 - still under the rule of the former Soviet Union - a young and determined dancer by the name of Birutė Letukaitė first organised a modern dance festival in Kanaus. It was a bold move. Now it is the longest running event of its kind in Lithuania.

The International Dance Festival AURA is a vibrant event of contemporary dance performances in which visual arts, contemporary and experimental music, new body movement forms and non-traditional dramaturgy find a unique place.

During the last 20 editions of the festival 150 companies and solo acts have been featured; among those such prominent artists as Yossi Berg and Oded Graf (Israel), ALIAS (Switzerland), Johannes Wieland Company (Germany), Ben J. Riepe (Germany), Virpi Pahkinen (Finland), Joonne Leighton (Belgium) and Jose Limon Dance Company (USA).

Every year the festival invites choreographic acts varying from pure dance to interdisciplinary conceptual or audiovisual art to perform. A lot of the festival action takes place in non-traditional environments, such as factories, conference halls and city spaces.
