Groundhog Day has been celebrated each and every February 2nd since 1886 when the one, the only Punxsutawney Phil leaves the snug sanctuary of his burrow - at the intriguingly named Gobbler's Knob - to form his weather prediction for the remainder of winter.

According to local legend, if Phil spies his shadow, the folk of Punxsutawney are in for six more weeks of winter. If there ain't no shadow, then it's an early spring.

Phil's success rate? 100% of course! Nothing less is expected from a groundhog that is reputedly over 120 years old. Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity from supping the "elixir of life" a secret recipe he imbibes every summer at the Groundhog Picnic that miraculously adds seven years to his life.
