Local Festivals

The boxing competition is the highlight of the Summer Festival and runs every day for a week. The competitors (mostly boys in their teens) come from as far afield as the Indonesian islands of Papua and Kalimentan and the whole event is taken very seriously by those involved

The action was fierce. A player came blazing by, setting up a shot for goal, a defender in hot pursuit. The soccer ball screamed toward the goal, only to be intercepted by......a palm tree.

With all this devastation there is a strange beauty about the place. There is certainly a beauty about the gemstone that the locals find here. Yowah is the home of the Yowah Nut. A nondescript brown stone on the outside , but when split in two, can reveal a beautiful iron stone centre with strange patterns and crystal opal either in a pocket or often spread throughout the stone.

Victoria, Texas, smack-dab in the heart of the grandest State in the whole United States of America! - continues to age and improve like a fine old wine.

As I drove into Chicago recently I asked my limousine driver what he liked best about living in Chicago. He replied, 'Chicago is an exhilarating city with a non-ending variety of activities - a great place to have fun and enjoy yourself.'

Visitors come from all over the island, from mainland Japan, and even from other countries to see the earliest sign of the approaching spring.

Visitin' yer unsestors r ye?' The driver asked as I gratefully climbed into his clapped out old van. I ignored his mistaken questioning. A mistake caused by my red hair, a mistake I was hearing all the time in Scotland. 'Are you going as far as Tobermory?' I asked hopefully, by way of a response. I was going to the 'capital' of The Isle of Mull, the third largest island in the Scottish Hebrides.

Recently I traveled to New York City, Atlantic City and Philadelphia and made it a point to check out several of my favorite stores, restaurants and festivals.
