Festival Name: Burning the Clocks
Festival Country: England
Festival Type(s): Solstice, Pagan, Street Parade
About a mile down the promenade from Brighton Pier, people congregate and gaze out over the silent beach towards the calm silhouette of a wicker king. They throng in the gathering darkness of the year's longest night, kids and adults jostling and stretching to get the best view. Except for their shuffling and whispering all you can here is the wind, and the slow ominous tattoo of the single drum.

Festival Name: Christmas
Festival Country: Indonesia
Festival Type(s): Christmas, Religious, New Year
The Equator lies to the south, about a half day's bumpy ride by bus, but the island's elevation negates the tropical latitude. We were dozing, tucked in sleeping bags, when a rousing chorus of Gloria Hallelujah and O Come All Ye Faithful woke us.

Festival Name: Woodford Folk Festival

Festival Type(s): Folk, Music - Folk, New Year
Woodford, held on Queensland's Sunshine Coast hinterland one hour north of Brisbane, is now one of the largest folk festivals in the world, hosting more than 2,000 performers and 120,000 visitors from throughout Australia and overseas for six days from December 27 to January 1 each year.

The month of December brings a flurry of parties and celebrations, leading up to the culmination of Christmas chaos or cheer, depending on your own personal viewpoint. Article Title: Santa Claus Pub Crawl
Festival Name: Santa Claus Pub Crawl
Festival Country: Australia
Festival Type(s): Christmas, Party, Drink
The Santa Claus Pub Crawl takes place on the last working Friday before Christmas. There is only one requirement: each crawler must be dressed head to toe in full Santa suit. Leeway can be given for home jobs performed on the suits such as cutting off trousers to keep cool and wearing thongs instead of gumboots, but every man, woman and over tanned Nordic backpacker must be fully Santa-ed to join in.

Article Title: Santa Run
Festival Name: Santarun
Festival Country: Wales
Festival Type(s): Sport - Bizarre, Christmas
Surreal was not the right word. The sea of crimson that stretched behind me deserved something more than that. This was more of a crazed hallucinogenic trip, a dream that I could wake up from at any second. This was either the work of a madman or a genius. But, as they say, 'when in Rome...'

Festival Name: New Year in Russia
Festival Country: Russia
Festival Type(s): New Year, Party, Food and Drink
One of the first questions my Russian acquaintances ask me is, "Have you ever celebrated the New Year in Russia?" When I say I haven't, they always laugh. Until I've met the New Year Russian-style, they tell me, I have never really celebrated it at all. My attempts to tell them about the Times Square parties leave them unimpressed.

Festival Name: Marblehead Christmas Walk
Festival Country: USA
Festival Type(s): Christmas, Religious, Walks
What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than to sing carols by candlelight in the brisk air in a quaint New England seacoast town as the lights of the town tree blink on for the first time. So begins the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk in Marblehead, Massachusetts, part party, part historical tour, and part shopping festival.

Festival Name: Christmas
Festival Country: Ireland
Festival Type(s): Christmas, Religious, Traditional
When I was a little girl, the day after Christmas was almost as much fun as the day itself. It was, and still is, a national holiday in Great Britain and Ireland, which makes a great deal of sense to me; adults get a day off to relax (or recuperate!), kids can look forward to going to the pantomime, and best of all, there's still that magical feeling of good cheer in the air.

Festival Name: Christmas
Festival Country: Worldwide
Festival Type(s): Religious
Twenty-six years ago I traveled to the North Pole in search of Santa Claus. I didn't get any further than Barrow, Alaska - the Arctic Ocean was completely frozen in huge mounds of ice - but the people there said I needn't go any further since no one lives at the North Pole. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. But my quest for Santa Claus continued until this year.

Festival Name: Christmas
Festival Country: Worldwide
Festival Type(s): Christmas, Religious, Traditional
No night in all the year is so charged with the supernatural as Christmas Eve - or so the legends say.

Article Title: The Last Rodeo
Festival Name: National Finals Rodeo
Festival Country: USA
Festival Type(s): Sport - Extreme, Sport - Equestrian
Although rodeo has been around almost as long as dirt, the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) has a more recent history. The first National Finals Rodeo was held at the Dallas State Fair Grounds in 1959, and since then, has undergone some interesting changes.

Article Title: A Medieval Christmas
Festival Name: Christmas
Festival Country: Worldwide
Festival Type(s): Christmas, Religious, Medieval
Let those who have no light in themselves light candles!' thundered the great Roman Tertullian. 'Let those over whom Hell fire is hanging, fix to their doors laurels doomed presently to burn. You are the light of the world, you are the tree ever green...make not your own house a temple.' Like the Puritans in later centuries, Tertullian urged the people to stop their so-called 'pagan' festivities at Christmas time.

Article Title: A Golden Christmas
Festival Name: Christmas
Festival Country: Venezuela
Festival Type(s): Christmas, Religious, Traditional
As the 25th approaches, the men start trickling back into the village from the myriad creeks they've been panning. The general store becomes a hub of activity. The ancient scales come out of their box and preside over the once-blue table outside.

The event is a complex and heady mix of music - folk, blues, tribal and world - oodles of street performers too. This is complemented with literally hundreds of talks, poetry, alto comedy, demonstrations and hands-on craft and arts workshops.
