If you like your religious events with a tribal feel and a heavy drum beat then the Ati-Atihan Festival may just be worth the journey to the Philippines. For three days every January the town of Kalibo on the island of Panay, comes to life with an abundance of colourful indigineous costumes and weapons in street parades where crowd participation is actively encouraged.
If you love the atmosphere, rythm and colour of Carnival but could do with a little less of the tourist overkill, then Boi Bumba on the Brazilian Isle of Paratins may be the next best thing.
The Bombadromo comes to life in late June for three nights as the two corrals of Garantido and Caprichoso serve up a Carnivalesque spectacular of sight and sound that really needs to be seen to be believed.

Here it is ladies and gentlemen, in all it's drum bangin', booty shakin' finery - the party to end all parties - Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For four days prior to Ash Wednesday each year Rio lights up and literally no-one is spared!
The commercial aspects of Carnival at the Sambadrome we've all seen on the box - the Parade of Schools where multi-million dollar floats and scantily clad locals (and tourists) compete to the rhythm of their baterias but Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is much, much more than what goes on in the Sambadrome.
Follow the bloco scene and party all night long to live music, local processions and Brazilian samba fuelled by plenty of the local poison, caipirihna - available from just about anyone, anywhere, anytime. For recuperation during those hazy daylight hours relax on some of the most magnificent beaches that grace God's given earth (Copabobana, Ipanema), then, prepare to do it all again. Carnival in Rio is in the streets, it's in the people, it's rhythmic and it's incessant. If you're body can handle it, you've just got to experience one Rio Carnival before your time is up!
The Queen of the Adriatic, Venice plays host to it's own very unique celebration of Carnival each February (Carnevale di Venzia) and has done on and off since 1268. Elaborate masks are central to Venice Carnival festivities and lend the celebration a sense of timelessness and mystery. The Venetian backdrop, truckloads of sumptuos Italian food and wine, a classical soundtrack and a frenzy of fireworks, make it one of Europe's most anticipated celebrations year after year.

Each and every August the chic London suburb of Notting Hill turns it on for Europe’s biggest celebration of Carnival. DJs and live acts take to the streets, colorful floats and scantily clad revellers ply the parade route to a samba beat and miles of street stalls sell jerk chicken and blackened corn on the cob by the bucket-load. If you make it to London for one weekend this year make it the bank holiday weekend in August for London's very own carnival - Notting Hill Carnival.

February in Quebec is winter carnival time and whilst the heat may be missing there's plenty of the white stuff, and it's used to create a Carnival celebration like no other.
For two and half weeks Quebec whoops it up winter-style with events ranging from dogsled racing and sled rafting to snow sculpting and outdoor dance parties. And whilst there may be no leggy Amazonian beauties scantily clad in strategically placed sequins name another carnival celebration where you can enjoy snow baths and arctic spas. Can't, didn't think so!
