Most dog owners are pretty damn biased. "My mutt is an athletic genius," a friend recently told me. He thinks his furry friend is the best thing since flush toilets because she can catch a frisbee in mid air. I told him to put Abby to the test.
From Los Angeles, CA, to Philadelphia, PA, there are plenty of regional dog frisbee disc competitions around the nation. The big kahuna is the Ashley Whippett Canine Frisbee Disc World Finals, held in DC every September since 1974, where sixteen teams of finalists from the regional events compete for the crown. Open to all purebred and mixed-breed dogs, this is a free event, both for competitors and spectators. The grand prize winner takes home a year's supply of canned and dry dog food and treats, plus a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond. Crowd size is about 10,000.
