Although the first crosswords are said to have appeared in England in the 19th century, the award for the first published crossword puzzle goes to the American side of the pond. December 21, 1913 was the fateful day, when The New York World newspaper bought a puzzle from journalist Arthur Wynne. In 10 short years, the crossword spread across the nation.
Today's foremost cruciverbalist -- crossword constructor -- is Will Shortz, who now hosts the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, billed at the nation's oldest (1977) and largest crossword tourney. Now every March about 250 show up to try their skills against other fanatics from around the world.
Contestants, who are divided into 11 divisions based on age and skill, are scored based on accuracy and time. While most come to compete for the $1,000 grand prize, others come for the company, guest speakers, not to mention the free wine and cheese. While the weekend is open to the public, tickets to individual events range between $35 and $95. Entry to all the events plus the awards luncheon is $140.
